Brethren Area Mushrooming
The Morels Are Here!!!!!!
Here in Wellston Spring not only brings us a world famous Steel head fishery, on the Big and Little Manistee rivers. We also have some of the best mushrooming opportunities one could ask for.
Because we are located in the center of the Manistee National Forest, we have thousands of acres of property open to the public. With this much land to roam one must have some prior knowledge of these specimens and the area.
Mushrooms!.JPG (25382 bytes)    Within the Wellston Area Tourist Association we have several members who live for the Morel season, some of these members even offer Mushroom tours.
For the beginners a guide is recommended not only could you get hopelessly lost in the forest, you could also mistakenly eat a mushroom that could make you become deathly ill.
For the beginner or someone just looking for more knowledge on Morels I have three personal favorites as far as field guidebooks are concerned.

The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms
A Morel Hunters Companion by Nancy Smith Weber
Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America by David W. Fischer and Alan E. Bessette

If you have never been Mushrooming before it is highly recommended that you purchase at least one of the books listed above.
